Fellowships

MedStar Washington Hospital Center offers fellowship training in emergency ultrasound, critical care, and sports medicine. Additionally, the opportunity exists to advance in other fellowship areas including toxicology and pediatric emergency medicine through our academic affiliates.

The 3 + 1 Concept

We currently support ACGME accredited fellowships in critical care and in sports medicine. Our academic affiliates support fellowships in pediatric EM and toxicology. In addition, we recognize that many emergency physicians desire to explore other particular areas of expertise. We feel that this type of graduate learning lends itself to a 3 + 1 model in which residency graduates, having completed a 3 year program, can spend a 4th year exploring their chosen niche while working part-time as an attending physician in one of our MedStar emergency departments. Currently we support fellowship training in Emergency Ultrasound which follows this model, and we are developing additional fellowship opportunities in the following areas: medical education, research, academics, administration, informatics, health policy, and simulation. Interested applicants should contact Nancy Kenny, EM Residency Coordinator, for additional information.
