Pediatrics is an essential component of emergency medicine training. The clinical schedule incorporates pediatric training in a variety of settings to create a diverse and comprehensive experience. Six months are spent in strictly pediatric rotations with additional pediatric experience in the Georgetown Emergency Department and include:
- Two one month rotations (PGY1, PGY3) at Pediatric Emergency Department at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, a community hospital in Montgomery County, Maryland. The Pediatric Emergency Department is dedicated solely to treating children and is staffed by physicians who are board certified in pediatric emergency medicine.
- One month (PGY2) is spent in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Fairfax INOVA Hospital in Northern Virginia providing experience with very ill children and the procedures involved in their care.
- Pediatrics shifts at Children’s National Medical Center are integrated into Washington Hospital Center Emergency Medicine months to provide a more longitudinal experience in the first and second years.
- One month (PGY3) is spent in the Pediatric Emergency Department at Fairfax INOVA Hospital in Virginia.
- Rotations at the Georgetown Medical Center’s Emergency Department where approximately 15% of cases are pediatric.
